The Seven Laws of the Universe

As above, so below. As within, so without. As the universe, so the soul.

Before there was a Greece, before there was a Rome, before the great philosophical traditions of the west had found their footing, there was Egypt. In Egypt, according to a tradition so ancient its precise origins are lost to history, there was a teacher called Hermes Trismegistus — Hermes the Thrice Great — a figure who exists at the intersection of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth, both gods of wisdom and the transmission of sacred knowledge between the divine and the human.

Whether Hermes Trismegistus was a single historical person, a lineage of teachers, or a mythological vessel for a body of wisdom that predates any individual is a question that scholarship has never fully settled. What has survived is the teaching itself — a body of philosophical and spiritual principles collected most accessibly in a text called The Kybalion that presents seven fundamental laws governing the nature of reality at every level from the subatomic to the cosmic.

These principles are not a religion. They do not require the abandonment of any faith you carry. They are a map — a description of how reality operates that, once understood, makes the territory of your own experience legible in ways it was not before. Every major spiritual tradition in the world contains these principles in some form because they are describing something real about the nature of existence that genuine seekers in every culture have eventually encountered.

The master key of the entire system is contained in what is called the Emerald Tablet — the opening line has echoed through three thousand years of mystical, alchemical, and philosophical thought: as above, so below. As below, so above. As within, so without. As without, so within. This single statement contains the whole of the teaching.

The Principle of Mentalism

The All is mind, the universe is mental. This is not the claim that physical reality does not exist or that matter is an illusion in the dismissive sense that word implies. It is the claim that the fundamental nature of reality is consciousness — that what we call the physical universe is the mental creation of the All, the infinite mind within which all things exist as thoughts exist within a mind, and that the human mind, being of the same nature as the All, participates in the creation of its experienced reality through the quality and content of its own mental activity. The practical implication is immediate and demanding. If the universe is mental in its fundamental nature, then the quality of your mental life is not a private matter with no external consequences. It is the primary creative force through which your experienced reality takes shape. The thoughts you habitually think, the beliefs you carry at the level beneath conscious awareness, the mental atmosphere you inhabit most consistently — these are not merely descriptions of your inner state. They are the blueprint of your outer one.

The Principle of Correspondence

As above, so below. As below, so above. The same patterns operate at every level of existence, that the laws governing the movement of galaxies are the same laws governing the movement of atoms, that what is true of the cosmos is true of the community is true of the individual is true of the cell. The universe is not a collection of separate systems operating on different rules. It is one system expressing itself at different scales, and the patterns that appear at any one scale are the same patterns appearing at every other. The practical power of this principle is the ability to understand one level of reality by studying another. If you want to understand how large systems behave, study small ones with similar structure. If you want to understand your outer life, study your inner one — because they correspond. Everything corresponds to everything else because everything is an expression of the same underlying reality.

The Principle of Vibration

Nothing rests. Everything moves. Everything vibrates. At the quantum level there is no such thing as a particle at rest, no solid matter that is not in constant motion, no stillness anywhere in the physical universe at its most fundamental scale. Everything that appears solid and static is actually a field of energy in constant vibration, and what distinguishes one thing from another is the rate of that vibration. The Hermetic tradition extends this observation beyond the physical to the mental and spiritual — thoughts vibrate, emotions vibrate, states of consciousness vibrate, and the frequency at which any of these vibrate determines their nature and their effects. The person who walks into a room and immediately makes everyone in it feel lighter or heavier, calmer or more anxious, without saying a word — is demonstrating the reality of vibration at the human level. The emotional frequency you inhabit most consistently is the frequency you broadcast and the frequency you draw into your experience. Raise your vibration — through genuine inner work, through the cultivation of love and gratitude and genuine presence — and what resonates with that frequency in the world around you begins to respond.

The Principle of Polarity

Everything is dual. Everything has poles. Everything has its pair of opposites. Hot and cold are not two different things — they are the same thing, temperature, at different points on the same continuum. Love and hate are not opposites in the way that up and down are opposites — they are the same emotional energy at different poles of the same spectrum, which is why they can transform into each other with a speed and ease that purely opposite things could never manage. If opposites are the same thing at different degrees, then transformation does not require the elimination of what you want to move away from — it requires the transmutation of it along the continuum it already occupies. Fear does not need to be destroyed to become courage. It needs to be moved along the spectrum it shares with courage. This is the Hermetic art of mental transmutation — the deliberate, conscious shifting of mental and emotional states along their natural continuums rather than the futile attempt to eradicate states that are simply the polar expressions of states you actually want.

The Principle of Rhythm

Everything flows out and in. Everything has its tides. All things rise and fall. The pendulum swing manifests in everything. The measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left. Rhythm compensates. Every movement in one direction contains within it the inevitability of a return movement, that every rise is followed by a fall and every fall by a rise, that the tide that goes out will come back in. For the person who has internalized this principle, the rhythms of life feel not like random assault but like the natural pulse of existence. In the upswing — build, expand, output, create. In the downswing — rest, integrate, prepare, conserve. Neither phase is failure. Both are necessary. The Hermetic masters taught a practice called rising above the swing — not the elimination of the rhythm, which is not possible, but the development of sufficient inner stability that the pendulum of circumstance swings without carrying the conscious self all the way with it in either direction.

The Principle of Cause and Effect

Every cause has its effect. Every effect has its cause. Everything happens according to law. Chance is but a name for law not recognized. There are many planes of causation but nothing escapes the law. Nothing happens without a cause. Nothing exists in your life that did not arrive there through a chain of causes — some of which you initiated, some of which were initiated by others, some of which stretch back further than any single lifetime can account for. The person who understands this stops experiencing their life as something that happens to them and starts experiencing it as something that happens through them — the result of causes they have set in motion, and the beginning of effects they are choosing to generate. Chance is not a real force in the universe. It is the name given to causal chains too complex or too subtle to be immediately traced. The Hermetic student learns to think causally — to ask not just what is happening but what caused it, not just what they want but what causes produce it. Changing the causes changes the effects as reliably as mathematics.

The Principle of Gender

Gender is in everything. Everything has its masculine and feminine principles. Gender manifests on all planes. This has nothing to do with biological sex or social identity. It is describing two fundamental creative forces that operate at every level of existence — the generative, projecting, initiating force called masculine, and the receptive, nurturing, gestating force called feminine — and the recognition that both are present in everything and that creation in any domain requires the interaction of both. At the human level every person regardless of biological sex carries both principles — the masculine force of directed intention, active will, and outward projection, and the feminine force of receptivity, intuition, gestation, and inner knowing. Creative power in any domain requires both. The highest human creativity occurs when the masculine will of the conscious mind plants the seed of a clear intention into the feminine depths of the subconscious, which then gestates that intention and brings it forth as manifestation in the outer world. This is the inner alchemy — the conscious cooperation of both principles within a single human being to produce creation that neither could produce alone.

The Living Completion

Yet the ancient tradition did not stop at seven. Passed down through quieter channels, preserved in scrolls that were never meant for wide circulation, two additional principles have accompanied the seven — not as corrections to what came before but as the living completion of it. The seven laws describe the nature of reality. These two describe what a human being must develop to consciously inhabit that reality. They are the hidden keys. The difference between knowing the map and being able to walk the territory.

VIII. The Principle of Awareness

Everything that has been written above — the mental nature of reality, the correspondence between inner and outer, the vibrational quality of all things, the polarity of opposites, the rhythm of all cycles, the chain of cause and effect, the dance of masculine and feminine forces — all of it is perceivable only to the degree that a human being has developed the capacity to actually see what is happening within and around them. Without awareness, the principles operate on a person. With awareness, a person begins to operate with the principles. This is the difference the eighth law names.

Awareness is not thinking. It is not analysis or self reflection in the ordinary sense. It is the recognition of the watcher behind thought — the silent presence that observes the mind moving without being moved by it. Most human life passes in a state of near total identification with thought and feeling — a word lands and emotion rises before understanding arrives, a memory surfaces and the body contracts before any choice is made. Awareness is the opening of a second position within the self — a witnessing presence that does not interrupt experience but perceives it clearly as it unfolds. The anger that felt absolute becomes observable. The fear that commanded immediate response becomes visible as a sensation moving through the chest rather than a truth demanding obedience.

IX. The Principle of Alignment

Awareness without alignment is a lamp without a foundation — it illuminates but does not hold. There comes a point in genuine inner development when knowledge stops behaving like information and begins acting like gravity within the person — quietly reorganizing conduct from the inside without requiring constant deliberate effort to maintain. This is alignment. Not a vow made in a peak moment of clarity. A settling. The natural result of awareness practiced long enough that understanding and behavior begin moving in the same direction rather than pulling against each other.

The divided life consumes hidden strength. The person maintaining different selves in different settings, concealing motives that contradict their stated values, defending positions the conscience quietly questions — that person is spending enormous energy not on living but on managing the inconsistency. Alignment gathers what division scatters. Thought, intention, and action begin speaking with each other rather than working at cross purposes. Integrity stops feeling like effort and begins feeling like relief.

What the ninth principle clarifies is why genuine change so rarely holds and what makes it hold when it does. Insight alone does not sustain transformation. Awareness alone does not sustain it. What sustains it is the slow, consistent, unglamorous repetition of honest choices that gradually shift the center of identity itself — until the person is no longer attempting to behave differently but has become someone for whom the old behavior no longer fits.

Together the eighth and ninth principles form the living bridge between the cosmological and the personal, between the laws of the universe and the life of the individual soul moving through it. The seven laws describe the territory. Awareness teaches you to see it clearly. Alignment teaches you to walk it honestly. Without the two hidden keys, the seven remain philosophy. With them, they become a way of life.

The tradition is now complete as it was always meant to be received — not as nine things to know, but as one unfolding recognition. The universe is alive with law. You are built to perceive it. And you are capable of living in genuine harmony with it. That has always been the whole of the teaching. Everything else was preparation for that.

The laws have always been here. Now you have the keys.
