Sacred Space
Feng Shui: Home, Mind, Body & Soul
Feng shui — literally 'wind and water' — is the ancient art of arranging space so that qi, life energy, can flow freely. The Akari view extends it beyond the home: your mind, body, and soul are spaces too, and they respond to the same principles of clearing, balance, and flow.
✦
Your Home — The Outer Temple
- ✦Clear the clutter first. Stagnant piles trap stagnant energy — a chair you can't sit in, a drawer you can't close, blocks the flow of qi through the whole space.
- ✦Let the entrance breathe. Your front door is the mouth of qi — keep it clean, well-lit, and unobstructed so energy can enter freely.
- ✦Balance the Five Elements. Wood (plants), Fire (candles, warm light), Earth (ceramics, stone), Metal (mirrors, metal frames), and Water (a small fountain or reflective surface) — a room with all five feels alive.
- ✦Let light and air move. Open curtains, crack a window, keep pathways clear — qi moves the way you do, in gentle, unobstructed lines.
- ✦Face your bed and desk toward the door, but not directly in line with it — this is the 'command position,' letting you see who enters while feeling secure.
Your Mind — The Inner Room
- ✦A cluttered home mirrors a cluttered mind, and a cluttered mind clutters the home right back — treat the two as one practice, not two chores.
- ✦Declutter your inputs the way you declutter a drawer: fewer notifications, fewer open tabs, fewer half-finished thoughts held at once.
- ✦Set intention before you tidy. Ask what you want the room, and your mind, to feel like when you're done — direction turns cleaning into a practice.
- ✦Give your mind a 'command position' too — a few minutes each morning where you observe your thoughts before the day rushes in, rather than reacting from the first one that arrives.
Your Body — The Living Vessel
- ✦Qi flows through you the same way it flows through a room — movement matters more than posture. Stretch, walk, breathe deeply; stagnation in the body feels like stagnation in a blocked hallway.
- ✦Keep your sleeping space calm and dark — the bedroom is Water in the body's own feng shui, meant for rest and restoration, not stimulation.
- ✦Eat and drink as you would furnish a room — with intention, not just to fill space. What you take in becomes the qi you carry.
- ✦Let your body's 'clutter' go too — tension held in the shoulders or jaw is the physical equivalent of an overstuffed closet. Release it daily, don't let it pile up.
Your Soul — The Sacred Corner
- ✦Create one small sacred space — a shelf, a corner, a windowsill — reserved only for stillness, prayer, or meditation. It doesn't need to be large to be real.
- ✦Let it hold what centers you: a candle, a meaningful object, a plant, an image of the Light. Let it be simple and true rather than elaborate.
- ✦Return to it daily, even briefly. A sacred corner visited once becomes decoration; visited daily, it becomes an anchor.
- ✦Let gratitude be the incense of the space — a moment of thanks before you leave it clears more than any object can.
✦
"Clear the room, and the mind follows. Clear the mind, and the body follows. Clear the body, and the soul finally has room to be heard."
